Experience

I have had many tutoring and teaching experiences throughout the course of my academic career. My first tutoring experience was part of a club called Vayuna, which was an organization aimed to tutor underprivileged kids in the area by going to after-school programs and being a part of the volunteering community. Vayuna went to the Boys and Girls club and committed hours to tutoring the elementary school kids, on top of taking them to play outside and have snack breaks. I tutored kids from the kindergarten level, all the way up to elementary 3rd grade level. I taught in all areas such as basic math, writing, and reading. My second tutoring experience was through the California Scholarship Federation (CSF) club, which enforced an after-school tutoring program for the high school students who needed help in various subject areas. I tutored in algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus, as well as other areas in the science category. My most recent teaching experience was at university, where I was an undergraduate instructional assistant (teaching assistant, TA). I taught college level introductory biology, and assisted the professor with exam preparation, proctoring, and grading, while running my own smaller discussion section classes. With my peers, I also taught large review session events prior to major exams. When I tutor or teach, I like to incorporate everyone. I try my best to make sure every single person receiving my instruction understand the material at hand. I do this by approaching the same problem or concept in different ways, and if need be, I go back to earlier concepts to build a foundation. With that, I am able to build up to the concept or problem at hand so that the student understands all the necessary components needed to understand the problem. Along with that, I like to make sure I teach with passion and interest, as opposed to being a boring and monotonous teacher. I also have good ways of teaching students to remember key concepts or ideas, and this is part of how I teach with enthusiasm and fun. Overall, I have received positive feedback from many students, even those who said that they would never understand the material at hand.

Hobbies

As an incoming Junior at UCSD, many of my peers say that I have pushed the boundaries of my college career to try to do everything possible. In my freshman year of college, I was doing research in cancer therapeutics, and as a sophomore joined to be an instructional assistant. I think that along with being extremely involved in the community outside of course-work. Along with these work experiences, I decided to randomly join an on-campus dining hall that made burritos (like an on-campus chipotle). I wanted to see how the food industry worked and what it took to make and serve good food to the community. I’ve branched out throughout my career, and can say that I have had many experiences that do not make me one-dimensional. With these early experiences, I’ve also volunteered my time to nature organizations and many health organizations, such as Muir Environmental Corps and Healing Hearts Across Borders. I like to be active in my community in as many ways as possible, and sometimes, being a role model or leader is not about simply gaining good grades, but going out and making a physical change in the community you live in. To me, that community does not have to be restricted to where you live, but can expand to this entire earth that we live on. On top of all this, I love to pass this kind of knowledge around to others, because I believe that along with education, compassion and motivation combined with the necessary tools will ensure a students' success in and far beyond the classroom.
