Education

I finished my PhD in Math at UC Berkeley in 2013. Prior to that I was an undergraduate at the University of Notre Dame where I received a B.S. in Honors Mathematics. Since graduating I spent 18 months researching and teaching in Scotland at the University of Edinburgh and then teaching for 3 years at the University of Utah. Now in San Diego I'm teaching at USD.

Experience

I have been tutoring consistently for the past 15 years, and have tutored students of all ages, at all levels, and in pretty much every subject from middle school math to graduate math courses. I love working 1 on 1 with students and focus on developing study skills and the seeing the bigger picture in mathematics. I've received a distinguished teaching award as an instructor at UC Berkeley, and have 9 years of formal teaching experience at UC Berkeley, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Utah. My passion for teaching and tutoring stems from the great joy that I experience when helping students realize their full potential, and conquer the obstacles standing between them and mathematical understanding. I work with students not only on how to arrive at the correct answer, but I also spend considerable time discussing study habits, and (depending on the level) the differences between studying for a math class and other courses.

Hobbies

I'm also a beginner pipe organist (have been taking lessons for 6 years). Interestingly, this gives me insight into what it's like to be a beginning student again, and I have used some of my experiences during music lessons to help shape my math teaching. Music and math are quite similar in many ways. In both, we encourage students to practice daily, but one skill I have learned in my music lessons is that the type of practice that one does is much more important than the amount. Playing the same mistakes over and over again can be counterproductive to the musician and likewise to the mathematics student... but that's all stuff we can discuss :) I'm also a keen rock climber, hiker, and trail runner.
