Experience

Throughout my first couple of years of college, I was a substitute dance teacher at the studio I attended, Dance & Company. which I still occasionally work at as a receptionist. I taught a wide variety of ages, ability levels, and styles and learned how to be flexible and versatile in my teaching. I found my footing as to how I wanted to carry myself as an educator through this wonderful experience. I began there as a teacher’s assistant, and worked my way up to being able to run a class by myself. I am truly thankful for the opportunities Dance & Company has given me. More recently, I have been actively tutoring at UCSD for over a year with the Conversation Partners Program. Specifically, I work one-on-one with international students to help them improve their English pronunciation, writing, grammar, and conversation skills. This has been a great joy to be a part of, as I have been able to gain a lot of insight on different cultures and form friendships with my students from all over the world. Through this experience, I have been able to fine tune my teaching style and learn how to teach to the individual student based on their goals and needs. I was also fortunate enough to volunteer at Pacific Beach Middle School through an Education Studies practicum during the 2015 Winter Quarter at UCSD. I worked in two 6th grade English classes, one which was a seminar level and one which was for English language learners and students with learning disabilities. I worked at PB Middle School for a total of 40 hours over the course of ten weeks. That was an incredibly eye-opening and rewarding experience that allowed me to learn how to teach to students with a broad range of abilities. The main objective of this course was to create a project that was beneficial to students, which could appeal to a broad range of learning styles and abilities, that would create a lasting impact on the classroom. I ended up creating a research guide which was a small booklet that had instructions on how to conduct research in it. The students at PB Middle School are expected to do a lot of research based projects and for the 6th grade level, they don’t necessarily have research methods memorized. This was created with and for the students and my host teacher liked the idea so well, she said she would implement it in years to come. Out of all the classes that I took over my college career, this practicum was far and away my favorite. I was able to form a genuine bond with all of the students I worked with and I still think about them often. Not only that, but the idea that I left a positive impact with that school gives me something to be proud of. This course reaffirmed my belief that teaching is what I really do want to pursue as a career and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. I recently got hired at UCSD Extension Campus to be a part of the Conversation Leader Program, which allows me to work in ESL classrooms with international students directly. I will assist them with getting more comfortable speaking the English language through discussions on a broad range of topics. I don’t have much to say on this new adventure yet, as I won’t begin until July, but I very much look forward to beginning my work with such a fantastic program soon. Tutoring allows me to gain experience with teaching on a lower scale and it allows me to fine tune my craft as I go. I will learn right along with the students and will constantly improve my own techniques as time goes by. I graduated from UCSD in June, and I plan on pursuing a TEFL certification with aspirations of moving abroad and teaching English around the world, so getting as much tutoring experience as possible will prove to be extremely beneficial for me in the long run. Ideally, I want as much experience as I can get with as many different people as possible. I feel like the key to success in teaching is knowing how to work with all the different personalities, learning styles, and abilities students bring to the table.

Hobbies

I am a dog person. I'll put that out there right away because I feel like people can get a good sense of each other based on the animals they love. I have two dogs of my own, a miniature schnauzer and a german shepherd. If you like dogs, we will most definitely get along. In my spare time, I enjoy being outdoors, going to the beach, going hiking, exploring San Diego for all its wonders. I have a hiking book with 50 different trails that someday I would love to be able to complete. If I am feeling like I need a more low key sort of day, then I am more than happy to sit in my room curled up with a good book, or with some art supplies. I love to draw and to paint. I also love TV. Netflix is my weakness. I watch a lot of TV so if you have shows you love and want to share that love, I am a good person to talk to. I have done a lot of traveling within the United States but I dream of being able to travel the world someday soon. I love sharing experiences in travel with other people. You learn so much about yourself and about others when you get to see so many different places and experience all sorts of different cultures.
