Experience

I recently graduated from the University of San Diego where I was able to design my own degree to include studies in fields ranging from Shamanism to the academic study of electronic music. However, my studies have been anchored around a pole of philosophy, my primary focus. Studying philosophy has given me the ability to connect a variety of subjects and opinions through creative and outside of the box analysis. Classes such as Vietnam Wars, Archaeology of the Bible, Philosophy and Freud, Chinese Religions, Psychoanalysis and the Narrative, Ethics of War and Peace, and even Writing Autobiography have all been flowers on the same stem. It is a wholesome and inspiring way to learn, one that is always flowing, and in a way, defies the compartmentalization of today's conventional education experience. Students learn history from a specific textbook in a specific room, then walk down the hall and do the same with literature, or mathematics. The reality is that all the subjects are interconnected and inform each other in amazing ways, and I believe the education system in place could do a much better job of teaching this. A critical part of my education has been investigating these relationships through clever, clear, and effective writing. I wish to be able share these skills with others. Education is the most viable solution we have to the world's most egregious problems. It is the best method to equipping future generations with the tools necessary to overcome their inevitable challenges. Fundamental challenges such as systemic racism, and blind consumerism, things we are constantly struggling with as a species, are overcome by educating humans. I want to be a part of this solution. I tutor as a way of increasing my ability and understanding of the art of teaching, so I can best cope with the future. Through tutoring I learn an enormous amount; it is a fascinating exercise in human interaction and the ability to teach a certain subject increases my understanding of it. Every session is a mutually beneficial meeting, that way my interest and quality effort is assured. I pride myself on my ability to speak clearly and effectively, and will bring that pride to every session. I have pursued outdoor guiding as a way of education, and have gained valuable experience in having a flexible teaching style, and adapting as a teacher to the student. I grew up one of six children, in what seemed like a constant flow of somewhat controlled chaos. Consequently, patience and adaptability have been important values to me from an early age. As has fun, I have developed quite the ability to have fun, and always try to have it; I like to laugh and smile, it feels good. Ultimately that is why I am here, teaching is fun.
